This committee was formed to modernize the Kalnay rules, guidelines developed in 1989 to help facilitate the interchange of Fortran subroutines for physical parameterizations. Modernizing the Kalnay rules addresses changes in computational hardware and software needed for operational NWP:

  • Parallel computing technology
  • Message Passing Interface (MPI)
  • Threading (OpenMP)
  • Accelerators
  • New Fortran standards
  • More complex physical parameterizations

This committee is developing a software driver interface that will allow for the incorporation of physical parameterizations into operational and research NWP models in a more efficient and standardized matter.

About Us

The Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC) was formed in 2010, with an updated Charter in 2016, between the original NUOPC partners with the addition of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Energy (DOE), and National Science Foundation (NSF) to improve coordination and collaboration across federally sponsored environmental research and operational prediction communities for scientific development and operational implementation of improved global prediction at the weather-to-climate interface.
